Goodbye Summer, Greetings Fall!

The summer began with a bang. If you’ve been following this blog for a bit, you may already know this, but my daughter got married at the end of May. The whole event went off devoid of any major hitches. It was a beautiful day, and I couldn’t have been happier for my daughter and her new husband. They are very well-suited for each other and very much in love. It is palpable whenever we’re in their company.

My daughter was pregnant as she said her vows. She and her husband were expecting baby #2 in December. However, shortly after baby #1’s first birthday at the end of June, she miscarried. These kids, along with the rest of us, were devastated. It was so unexpected, as my daughter had been told that her pregnancy was coming along very well and that the baby had a strong heartbeat not three weeks prior. Seeing my daughter so bereft broke my heart.

Baby #1’s birthday, which we celebrated at our house (he also had two other birthday parties on his daddy’s side of the family, lucky little nugget) with my in-laws was absolutely delightful. Baby loved grabbing fistfuls of cake with his chubby hands and scarfing it down. He delighted at us singing the Happy Birthday song and clapped at the end. Mr. NOA took a video of it which we will treasure forever and ever.

This is the part of the story of the Summer of 2026 where I talk about The Fence.

Long story short: our neighbors adopted a little doggie and our two bigger doggies enthusiastically greeted them two twice in under 2 weeks, causing a bit of a ruckus. Mind you, no one was hurt. Out of an abundance of caution, we put up a fence. Mr. NOA and I were unhappy that this was what needed to happen, as our boys just love to run free and romp around our property here in the Minnesconsin countryside.

Yet, after a little bit of time, I realized that I don’t hate that we have the fence. More importantly, the dogs don’t hate it either. The fence is right outside the sliding glass door that goes from the entryway onto the deck. We also put cameras out there so we can see what they are up to. We have this sweet spot between our walk-out basement and our shed that is largely flat, shaded, and shields the dogs view of the road, so they can’t easily see if our neighbors are walking their little doggie. So when we want them to run free, we just yell out “who wants to go outside downstairs?!” and the dogs rush to the stairs, Radar picking up a toy to bring with (and leave outside every time). They get out there and they run and run and run, and play-fight and they absolutely love it. I’m glad we figured this out. This was a space on our property which was not getting much use anyway, and now I have all kinds of plans in my head about what we can add to it to create an even more fun family/dog space to enjoy (a bench swing here, a fairy garden there, maybe a picnic table?). That’ll be a top priority for me come late Spring/early Summer of 2027.

Also this summer, we stopped just talking about the many home improvement projects we want to do and we started doing them. The entryway is no longer adorned with emerald green carpeting and has been replaced (thanks to Mr. NOA) by a beautiful marbled dark gray and tan tile. It looks fantastic.

And now, there is tile instead of carpet in our living room, which eradicated the odor of dog pee (a consequence of having a puppy who has been hard to potty train). I no longer will be embarrassed to have company over! Mr. NOA also painted the walls a warm white (something we’ve been talking about for at least two years now). We picked up new blinds for the picture window in our living room as well. We got ourselves a new microwave and Mr. NOA fashioned a piece of Acacia wood as a shelf to hold it above our stove. We also replaced the flourescent lights in our kitchen and dining room with energy-efficient, soft LED bulbs. Big improvement there. We’re hoping next to tackle fixing some of the boards on our deck and staining it, along with our little fence on the other side of our propane tank before it gets too cold out. Though it of course depends on having at least a few days in a row without any rain.

Photographic evidence of before, after, and in-between! Note on pic #3 which reveals that someone with paws walked into the living room before the Killz had fully dried. Oh, these dogs!

So it was kind of an up-and-down summer and I’m so ready for fall! I adore the month of September and have lots of fun things to look forward to this fall. The area festivals, a trip to a corn maze with the kids, perhaps an out of town overnight with friends and family, and of course, Halloween! That begs the question, how shall we celebrate? What costumes shall we wear? Now is the time to start planning, methinks.

How was your summer, friends? Are you geared up for Fall, like me?

I like this quote I recently found from F. Scott Fitzgerald: “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall”. I’m ready to embrace this mindset.

And now for the most apropos song imaginable to cap off today’s post!

What Sticks

I’ve decided to put a pin in the post I planned to publish today. It’s about this guy:

Radar, snoozing in our camper. Isn’t he a beaut?

I want to take my time with that post and get it right. Give it the love and attention it deserves.

Anyway, what this post is actually about is words. Lyrics, specifically.

Now, as the melophile I aspire to be (because I mentioned it in a sort of recent post but quickly realized that many, many, other people are way bigger melophiles than this gal who needs to fricking catch up), I’m going to share with you some song lyrics that have stuck with me from the moment I first heard them.

From Alanis Morissette’s “Isn’t it Ironic?”: “Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you when you think everything’s okay and everything is going right… and life has a funny way of helping you out when everything’s gone wrong and everything blows up in your face”.

It’s like, we make plans and God laughs, which I wholeheartedly believe is true. We have the illusion that we are in control, then, in an instant, we are reminded that is not the case at all.

Gotta love that little “boop” on the nose!

Not necessarily “ironic”, but as you are reading this, there is approximately an 8.8% chance that I, at that precise moment, am rocking out to a live version of Alanis singing “Hand in My Pocket”. This is on account of the fact that Hubs and are will be seeing her perform tonight, on the first day of fall, in Denver.

Here’s a great cover of the quintessential song to usher in this new season.

Now, back to those lyrics…..

From the Avett Brothers “Head Full of Doubt”: “Decide what to be and go be it”. Very inspirational, while simplistic. But maybe that’s the point.

Liz Phair was supposed to be touring with Alanis this year, but a couple of months ago suddenly pulled out for personal reasons (I hope she and her family are ok). That really, truly bummed me out. I was so looking forward to seeing her play live as I’ve been a fan of hers for years now. The song lyric I’m choosing here isn’t from a song on her critically acclaimed and wildly popular “Exit in Guyville” album, but a track from a later one.

From “Somebody’s Miracle”: “There goes somebody’s miracle, walking down the street”.

Why do I love this lyric? Because it makes me happy to think that it’s true: that when I’m engaging in one of my favorite activities-people watching-I can think of this line and imagine that every soul I’m seeing is somebody else’s “miracle”. That someone in their lives adores them that deeply, no matter what they look like, how they behave, or even how they smell. I know it’s corny, but I think if we can all try to do this when in public, we can soften our hearts and suspend judgement.

So, I ask you, fellow readers and/or melophiles, what lyrics have stuck with you? Please don’t overthink this-that takes the fun out of it! I look forward to your comments.

Respite Sunday

Happy Sunday (or Saturday or Monday, if you live outside the U.S.)!

I’ve decided just for today I’m taking a break (aka respite) from my Alphabet Soup Challenge.

I wanted to pause for a beat to tell you all that I may skip publishing a time or two in the next couple of weeks, because Eldest and our grandson are coming to visit soon. For a whole week! This is the longest period of time they will have ever been here for. Eldest was furloughed from her job until at least the end of this month due to the slow down in business for her employer thanks to Covid-19.

Despite the fact that our grandson just started 1st grade a few weeks ago (in person) it seemed like the perfect moment to have the two of them come for a visit. This is going to be so much better than when they typically come to see us, in November or May, when the temps are not as pleasant as they are in the beautiful month of September.

So instead of finishing a publishing whatever the next post will be in my “Alphabet Soup Challenge” today, I’m going to give the house a good cleaning, dust off the old Fall/Halloween decor (and set up the new stuff I got yesterday) and decorate the house so it’s all comfy, cozy, and clean for my beloveds.

Please click on the link below to enjoy one of my favorite dancing tunes!

The music of a melancholy Monday

Yes, unlike my usual upbeat self, today, Monday, I am feeling blase, minimally motivated, and melancholy-ish. There’s no good reason for it I’m healthy, Hubs and I have a nice home to live in, the spawn are fully functional adults, busy with their own lives far away from here. Maybe that’s it.

September is a month I have always loved. And here I am, smack dab in the middle of it, and I just don’t have the same enthusiasm I used to at this time of year. I see all the pictures on Facebook of those friends and family of mine with their kids sporting their new duds on the front stoops of their family’s home for the first day of school. Some of those kids are smiling (not surprisingly, the younger they are, the bigger the smiles), some have that look on their faces that communicate they are cooperating with this photo shoot under great duress.

Weird thing is, it turns out as much as I was pining for the “empty nester” years whilst my spawn were spewing hateful insults at each other and gifting Hubs and I with gray hair, I do terribly miss those days. Funny how that is.

On those odd days in which I’m not feeling so perky, I rely on my music. Not only am I drawn to a great melody, solid drum beats and guitar riffs; I am a sucker for a great lyric. Some just stick with you. You know what I mean, right? They resonate with you at your core. They make you think of someone you love or have loved. They make you feel less alone in the world. They make you feel better.  Sometimes they even inspire you.

This is the part of this post where I am going to do a little sharing.

Here’s just a few song lyrics that resonate with me right now, today. Monday.

“We can never know about the days to come, but we think of them anyway”-Anticipation by Carly Simon.

Honestly, I probably do this too much.

“Some people are just meant to be a memory, to be called upon to remind us how we’ve changed”-Coming Back to a Man by Dawes

Sad, but true. Relationships we have throughout our lives provide some good lessons.

“We are the lucky ones, some people never get to do all we got to do”- Now and Forever by Carole King

How I feel about my marriage to Hubs. We most definitely are the lucky ones.

“If it makes you happy, it can’t be that bad, if it makes you happy, why the hell are you so sad?”-If It Makes You Happy, by Sheryl Crow

Good question. The answer often alludes me.

“You can build a mansion, you just can’t live in it. You’re the fastest runner but you’re not allowed to win. Some break the rules, and let you cut the cost. The insecurity is the thing that won’t get lost”-No one is to Blame, by Howard Jones

My way of expressing the frustration I have with myself as a writer.

“When the road gets dark and you can no longer see, Just let my love throw a spark and have a little faith in me”-Have a Little Faith in Me, by John Hiatt

My way of saying, stick with me people. I am part hot mess and part optimist. But my determination to be light in the darkness will never wane.

“Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow, don’t stop, it’ll soon be here. It’ll be here, better than before. Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone”-Don’t Stop, by Fleetwood Mac.

I’d love to add the line “and don’t forget about today” but I’ve no clue where it would go. Guess I just think while it’s important to put some focus on tomorrow, the future that holds so much promise, not living in the present prevents you from finding peace in your soul.

That said, I will leave you with this video. Because underneath the melancholy of today, I’m still an optimist.

Don’t Stop
