“Small Potatoes”

In case you haven’t seen or heard this, the current resident of the White House recently commented that the damage to the U.S. in the war he chose to embark on with Iran, was “small potatoes”.

Can you imagine? The 18 families grieving their loved ones who died in this debacle certainly don’t think this is “small potatoes”. What an insult. What an abhorrent thing to say or even to think. The man has no respect for anyone.

It is astonishing to me that his fat orange ass is still in his job. That in spite of all the damage he’s caused since he glided down that escalator, he gets to keep his job. It’s like, America, are you for real right now?

I believe that this issue, this war with Iran and his casual dismissal of the damage it’s caused and lives it’s taken, will be the last straw that will get people to the polls in November. You would have thought the last straw might have been the Epstein files, his tarrifs, or his insistence on desecrating the White House and the Kennedy Center. But disrespecting our troops and not having a plan to get them out of there…it’s gotta be the beginning of the end for this evil White House mafia’s reign, right?

The mid-terms are right around the corner-a mere 39 days away now, my fellow American friends. This is our chance to use the power we have and get these bums out of office and welcome in new, progressive energy. After we vote in people who can right this ship, just imagine what America can begin to look like. I believe the pendulum is going to swing harder than ever to the other side at this point. History is on our side.

Our job now is to get through to the mid-terms. Knowing there will be shenanigans, as the MAGA coalition is going to do all it can, legal or not, to thwart the will of the people. I don’t know about you, but I can’t not do anything at all to try to push things in the right direction between now and then. I recently found a company that you can puchase postcards from, which provides you with a list of names and addresses of people who tend to vote progessively, but do not have a history of voting in mid-term elections. I spent about an hour a few weeks back writing out 20 postcards and sending them out to American voters in about 4 different states, encouraging them to vote and signing with “Rhonda, from Osceola, WI”. The theory is that people are more likely to take action on something if they receive a handwritten note from another person. I encourage you all to do this. It’ll be a small way for you to stand up for a better America.

And let me leave you with a song with an important message from badass American musical icon, Sheryl Crow:

It’s the 4th of July

And I’ve got some thoughts and feelings to share.

I’m hesitant to celebrate this day, because I’m just so disappointed in where we are as a nation. My heart feels heavy and my natural optimistic tendencies are waning.

As you all are likely aware, the bill that strips the poor of their health care, will likely lead to the closure of rural hospitals (like the one my newest grandson was born at), takes food away from families that rely on SNAP, greatly increases spending for the ICE thugs to kidnap and disappear both law-abiding undocumented immigrants and American citizens alike, while giving billionaires tax cuts that will surely not “trickle down” to benefit working folks like you and me, passed in the Senate yesterday.

My fellow Americans, the country we grew up in is not the same. It’s been reshaped by greed and cruelty. We have fallen so far. Our nation’s people have been monumentally manipulated by power-hungry, evil actors.

My biggest hope is that we’ll somehow get ourselves out of this horrific mess. A revolution, powered by the people of America, is needed now. I sense it is coming. I pray it will be peaceful, but I recognize that is unrealistic. There’s too much anger (the righteous kind) amongst our populace and we’re scrappy…right? There’s so many of us that did not consent to this baloney.

Suffice it to say, I’m unable to muster any sense of pride in America today.

The best I can do is continue to speak out, stand up for what is right, and focus on the America that could be. The America that celebrates the immigrant. The America that feeds the hungry and lifts up the poor. The America that stands for due process and the freedom to love, live, and pursue each citizen’s own version of happiness. The America that works to preserve democracy, the health of our planet, and the well-being of all the people living here.

So, Happy Independence Day to those who celebrate and those whose heart is just not in it this year.

I may not be proud of America at the moment, but I love her anyway.

Political Ponderings

I have, much to my dismay, become a political news junkie. Gone are the days when I gorged myself on televised eye candy like The Voice and Dancing with the Stars. This is largely thanks to the man in the White House and the slithering cadre of reprehensible characters in his administration. So for a change of pace today, I’m going to share some random thoughts, questions, and opinions I have regarding the political shit show on our nightly television screens here in 2017 America.

  1. Poor Sean Spicer. I know, crazy statement right? But hear me out: what must it be like to be him right now? He most certainly has the Worst. Boss. Ever. He has to interact with this horrible excuse of a human being on a daily basis. In person. And he has a woman (Melissa McCarthy, who to me is pure comic genius playing Spicey) mimicking him on national t.v. weekly. It would suck to be him right now, am I right?
  2. The first thought that came into my head prior to Trump’s decision to approve the  military strike in Syria following the chemical weapon attack which took multiple lives, was “why don’t we send humanitarian aid instead”? I think that is likely what Obama would have done. And I would hope any president would have done in the same circumstances.
  3. Why on earth didn’t Trump focus on gaining support for an infrastructure bill instead of putting all that focus on repealing (and kinda sorta trying a little to replace) the ACA? I realize the obvious answer to this question is two fold: He is a complete moron and clearly not a politician.
  4. Speaking of Trump not being a politician, I am of the opinion that the word “politician” has a bad rap. I think if we actually had a politician (of course, not just any old politician) in the White House, things would be better. A politician would most surely have the smarts to actually put folks in high positions that have at least some measure of political experience and knowledge. They wouldn’t hire the likes of Betsy DeVos to be the head of Education or  Steve Bannon as White House Chief Strategist. And don’t even get me started on Kellyanne Conway. She is so totally full of shit and needs to go back to her bar stool and finish her Moscow Mule.
  5. The next few months are going to be rough. No sugar coating it. There is a history of revolutionary type shit hitting the fan during the dog days of summer. Check Wikipedia on this, trust me. The American people are pissed, and rightly so. Our health care, economic statuses, air and water quality, rights to fair representation, and so on are all being threatened because of who is in charge at the White House. All the tensions are going to bubble to the surface as the temperatures rise. Seems like a perfect storm to me.
  6. The “super heroes” of this time in history from my perspective are the following (in no particular order): political satirists (think SNL, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Seth Meyers), journalists (truth tellers like Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow), politicians (brave ones like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Chuck Schumer), and courageous, normal, everyday Americans who are speaking truth to power by posting videos from interactions with their district’s representatives and senators at town hall meetings and sharing their personal stories of the negative impacts the decisions of this cold hearted, incompetent administration has on their lives and futures. I also believe the FBI as well as the ACLU have the ability to use their super powers to meticulously investigate what is really going on behind the scenes at the White House, from the Trump/Russia fiasco to Trump’s financial entanglements that may have and/or could compromise his ability to make fair decisions for the American people.

Okay, so Polly got political today. And she has no regrets.
